Tour
description
You
will be picked up from your accommodation in Trieste
at 9.00 a.m. to start a wonderful morning tour exploring
the Postojna cave complex, one of the largest and
most easily accessible networks of underground caves
in the world. All travellers visiting the cave are
beckoned from afar by the inscription above the entrance
"Immensum ad antrum aditus!", "Enter, traveller, into
this immensity!" And that's true. The vastness of
this underground realm is breathtaking as is its secret
beauty. The visit begins with a short a ride in an
electric train and continues with a guided walk through
a seris of foodlit subterranean caverns, halls and
corridors carved out by the Pivka River through the
centuries and decorated with shining stalagtites and
stalagmites and enormous maze of crystalline stone
curtains, pillars and altars. The underground waters
flowing in the cave system are also the home of the
world's unique "human fish" , an endangered species
of the amphibian Proteus Anguinus, which is the only
cave-dwelling vertevertebrate in Europe. The tour
lasts about 90 minues. The temperature inside the
cave is 10°C year round so a warm jacket is recommended.
